Auditions! Spring Musical: Mamma Mia!

Benjamin Fishman

Preparations for Reservoir’s spring musical, Mamma Mia!, are already underway. On Tuesday, October 18th, interested students met in the auditorium after school for an informational session with Dr. Knauf, who, along with Mrs. Binder, directs the production. Conceived by producer Judy Craymer, the musical follows the story of a young bride-to-be searching for her biological father. She finds three possible fathers, each of them equally likely to be the real deal. When they come to her Greek island hometown, she is determined to figure out which one it is, all while her mother deals with the resurfacing of her past paramours.

For its music, Mamma Mia! features hit songs from the Swedish pop band ABBA, whose music topped worldwide charts and secured Sweden’s first Eurovision victory with their song Waterloo. In 2005, it was chosen as the best song in Eurovision history. The song is performed in Mamma Mia!, along with many others, including “Dancing Queen” and “Super Trouper.”

“It’s a crowd-pleaser,” said Dr. Knauf. “It’s fun, it’s lighthearted.”

Those interested in joining the cast submitted their video auditions by October 28th. Then, callbacks were originally scheduled for November 3rd and 4th, but were later moved to the 10th and 11th. Dr. Knauf said that he and Mrs. Binder are “looking for people who can tell a story through singing and through their acting.”
