Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is a tradition based on a story passed down through the generations about an important meal shared at Plymouth Rock. The story goes that local Native Americans welcomed the courageous, pioneering Pilgrims to a celebratory feast. Some mistakenly believed there was peace between the Pilgrims and Native Americans. However, disagreement, betrayal, and bloodshed plagued the famous feast between the Wampanoag tribe and the Pilgrims.

A Native American from Cole’s Hill at Plymouth Rock commented, “Thanksgiving day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands, and the relentless assault on Native culture. Participants in National Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the
struggles of Native peoples to survive today. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection as well as a protest of the racism and oppression which Native Americans continue to
experience.”
Thanksgiving traditions have evolved as more and more people understand the historical context. The reasons may change, but the central theme of the holiday is about coming together as family, friends, and community.
“I know the story of Thanksgiving is that the Pilgrims came to Plymouth Rock, and as they were
there, they met the Native Americans. I guess on that day, they both broke bread and had a
feast on the day that we now call Thanksgiving,” said Maya Davis.

Thanksgiving evolved into a holiday where many give thanks for their blessings and celebrate the seasonal change to autumn. For some, a stuffed turkey with dressing is the main attraction at Thanksgiving family dinner.
Senior Kia Hayman said, “My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is going to my aunt’s house and joking around with my cousins. I always look forward to the food my family has prepared, especially turkey, dressing, macaroni, and cheese. Being off school isn’t such a bad thing either.”

Over the years, families have added meanings to the definition of Thanksgiving. These traditions make it an enduring holiday.
