WHAT IS THE YOUTH CLIMATE INSTITUTE?

Climate change is the biggest threat affecting our collective futures. Yet, when we recognize young people’s achievements as they transition from high school into the world, environmental achievements are largely unrecognized. This program supports students as they build their resumes and skills at a pivotal time for their college and career goals and builds a cadre of science literate climate ambassadors prepared to make an impact.

In this program students can achieve two certification levels – Certified Ambassador and Certified Ambassador with Honors. Program components include climate science and climate communications courses, community action projects, and a capstone project guided by a mentor. Through their community projects, students identify and initiate actions that lessen the effects of climate change on human health, biodiversity, and the economy.

In this program organized through the Howard County Conservancy, you will learn climate science and work with community partners such as the Howard County Office of Sustainability, NAACP, University of Maryland, and Maryland League of Conservation Voters to develop climate solutions.

Graduates of the program will become Certified Ambassadors with Honors and will receive graduation cords, digital badges, and will be eligible for scholarships.
