The Muslim Student Association Returns to Reservoir

The Muslim Student Association (MSA) meets weekly. It offers a place where Muslim students can come together to discuss important matters in the school’s community.

The revamped MSA has strong leadership and has selected President Mohammed Abdulmujeeb and Vice President Bilal Chaudhry. They both hold strong views on the need for the MSA to make a positive difference.

Abdulmujeeb said, “In the past, Reservoir had a large MSA with approximately 30 student members doing fun activities almost every week.” COVID hurt the ability to plan activities. Consequently, the Muslim population at Reservoir has not had an opportunity to meet regularly. Abdulmujeeb said, “In Islam, our religion, Muslims congregate every Friday for prayer, and so with the MSA, we wanted to encourage Muslim students to come together.”

Chaudhry said, “It is important to have a prayer space that is quiet and peaceful, especially on Fridays when prayers are obligatory for all Muslims. By having an MSA, we can have a space to pray and for Muslim students to socialize with each other.”

Many of RHS’s clubs and organizations reach out to the community and work to cultivate positive change. Abdulmujeeb said, “Service is one of the priorities of the Muslim Student Association. We are planning a fundraiser to benefit victims of floods in Pakistan.” The flooding has impacted almost a third of the country, and we want to help. We will be planning and organizing fundraisers and events.” Chaudhry said, “By having an MSA, we can encourage more students to express needs specific to Muslim students. We hope to inspire more people to come and learn about Islam.”

The mission and outreach plans of the MSA also include participation in academic competitions. Abdulmujeeb said, “We plan to participate in the annual Muslim Interscholastic Tournament (MIST), where over 6,000 students come to compete while developing creative skills and learning from professionals.”

The leaders and members of the MSA are excited to engage the school and community in their goals for the school year. The club faculty advisers are Mrs. Ahmad and Mr. Lemle.
