Even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to surge, Howard County is determined to allow all sports to run. After 18 months, winter sports are finally allowed to resume. This season the Reservoir High School boys’ Varsity basketball team comprises 13 juniors and seniors led by their head coach Ian Pope. To kick off the season, the Gators played a stellar game against Laurel High on December 6, 2021. Reservoir won 58 to Laurel’s 46 points. The lineup from the game, with the scoring headlined by Dylan Longs’ 20-point contribution. Before this game, the Reservoir boys basketball team had played several scrimmages at Westminster and Century High School. The next game they played was away against Oakland Mills on December 8th. Reservoir lost their game and scored 49 to Oakland Mills 63. Unfortunately, after their first game, all sports and clubs were suspended indefinitely and after about three weeks. But on January 3rd Howard County finally lifted the ban allowing them to play again. Their returning game was played away at Mt.Hebron on Wednesday, January 12th, and they defeated the Vikings 60-52 in a close game. They continued and faced off against Hammond at home in an intense game on January 14th. Reservoir won by a hair 48-47. Reservoir followed up their winning streak on Friday, January 21st, at home, playing against Centennial. It was a high-scoring game for Reservoir. The final score was 74 to Centennials 53 points.

Currently, the Reservoir boys Varsity team is 5-4 and ranked 7th out of 12. They’ve fallen short with their loss against Glenelg. They still can bounce back and be back in the top three again. Their next game will be at home against Marriotts Ridge on Tuesday, February 8th. Marriotts Ridge is 8-1, being ranked #2. River Hill will be their next opponent, ranked #3 on the 15th, and Oakland Mills on the 17th, who is dead last. Reservoir’s team will certainly be looking to come back and win these last few games and be back to one of the best.

On the girl’s side of basketball, the Reservoir girl’s Varsity team started off their season with a few scrimmages against Mt De Sales and Severna Park. This season’s varsity roster consists of  22 girls, from freshmen to seniors. They are led by their head coach Deb Taylor. Their first official game was on December 10th at home against River Hill. The first game the girl’s team played after returning from winter break and the sports ban was on January 12th at home against Mt. Hebron. The game was extremely close, with Reservoir favoring winning. For the first three-quarters, Reservoir was leading, but in the 4th quarter, the Gators collapsed, causing the game to end with Mt.Hebron winning 50-43. Hammond was Reservoir’s next opponent, and they played a close away game, losing 48-41. Their most recent game was away against Centennial on Friday, January 21st, resulting in another loss for Reservoir. The score was 52-43.
