Homecoming and Spirit Week 2022

2022’s Spirit Week kicked off the school year with a fresh burst of energy. Each day, students were encouraged (but not required) to dress according to a specific theme chosen by class officers and SGA.

Monday’s theme– Dynamic Duo– saw people matching with each other in partner costumes including Mario and Luigi, Thing 1 and Thing 2, and Men in Black. Then, on Y2K Tuesday, people came dressed in an entire spectrum of early 2000s looks, from backwards hats to pink tracksuits to emo fashion. Wednesday’s Celebrity Day was full of outfits that emulated idols and icons.

Thursday’s theme, Gilded Glamor, was “inspired by the Met Gala of 2022,” explains SGA member Haley Ko. “It’s very diverse in the way you can style it.” Outfit inspirations ranged from Gilded Age historical fashion and the 2022 Met Gala itself. Each class had a gem or precious metal as part of the theme– Gold for seniors, ruby for juniors, silver for sophomores, amethyst for freshmen.

Haley Ko and Madison Falby, second vice president and board member of the SGA respectively, detailed the process of choosing the themes. Behind the scenes, the SGA looked up which themes were popular across schools in the country, and arranged 20-30 of them into a slideshow that was then shown to the class boards. “They were the ones who ultimately made the decision,” Ko said. In the end, it was the class officers’ votes that decided which themes would be included.

They made sure that they were choosing themes that had been requested. “That was the point of most of our campaigns– To actually listen to your feedback,” said senior class treasurer Ogo Taiwo.

As fun as it may be to see people dressed up, there is a purpose to Spirit Week beyond that: School spirit. “Reservoir, since COVID, hasn’t really been big on school spirit,” said Madison Falby. “So we, as the new upcoming SGA, want to make sure that everyone is happy with how their school sports are going, their diversity, and everything.”

It gives people who may have otherwise not stood out a chance to have fun and show their spirit. “You get to see people show up,” said Destiny Olamide, senior class secretary, “and that’s the beauty of it.”
