Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual observance in the United States and Canada, celebrated in February. The month-long celebration recognizes the contributions, achievements, and experiences of African Americans throughout history. The Black Student Union has a few events planned during February to commemorate the month. All of which celebrate the culture and achievements of Black and African Americans.

The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson established the first “Negro History Week” to highlight the contributions of African Americans to American society. Over the years, the observance grew into a month-long celebration, with events and activities aimed at educating people about the rich cultural heritage and history of African Americans. Ms. Davis said, “Celebrating a whole month dedicated to it is because in history African American people have not been celebrated or there’s always been a lot of struggles to get to certain points in life. Celebrating those things are important because we are still not fully at a point where African American people are seen. There are negative stereotypes associated and people see those before they see the actual person, so it’s important to showcase the positive black excellence we have going on here in Howard County.”

Black History Month is an opportunity to honor the legacy of African Americans, including notable figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama, as well as the countless unsung heroes who have made important contributions to society in fields like science, arts, and politics.

Today, Black History Month continues to be an important time for people of all races to come together and celebrate the contributions of African Americans to our society and the world. Through events, exhibits, and educational programs, people can learn about the rich history and cultural heritage of African Americans and gain a deeper appreciation for the contributions of this vital community.

Throughout February, The BSU has planned many events to celebrate Black History Month, including daily announcements over the intercom that inform the students about lesser-known facts, spirit week, a blackout day, and a Black History program that will be held in the evening hours on the 23rd. That program will include a talent showcase. All of which were BSU approved.
