An Interview with Reservoir’s Junior Class President Sameera Chaudhry

By Connie Rogers, Staff Writer

After having a successful sophomore year as President, Sameera chose to run again. She campaigned through social media and built relationships with other students. Sameera said, “I was class president during sophomore year, and I loved it! I met so many amazing people, and there was so much I could do for the people in our class. The one reason I ran again was that I knew there was so much unfinished business I wanted to get done.” There are many duties for a class officer; it takes hard work, brainstorming, and planning events.

“I wanted to have more events and social hours where juniors could attend and have fun.”

Sameera said, “I feel Resi has a hard time with events exclusive to some groups. Therefore, I ran to ensure that everyone could participate without feeling excluded. Although it was a challenging campaign, I knew it would be worth it in the long run!”

Earning the votes of the student body can be an uphill battle. Sameera found that campaigning for Junior Class President uncovered intense competition, but she was eager to win. She developed a strategy and put in the hard work to communicate her platform. “While I was campaigning, it was surprising to find so many other candidates also running, which made me more motivated to run and win. I didn’t realize campaigning would be such a challenging endeavor. There were so many components that many people didn’t consider. Such as posters, Insta posts, talking to people in-person, getting insight from the class about what they want, etc.” I had to be attentive while at the same time having to make sure I could get my point across. I spent most of my time just listening to see what people wanted. Moreover, I didn’t realize how hard it was to stay relevant while campaigning.”

Sameera found that she needed to change her posters and create daily Insta posts. She acknowledged the contribution of her friends Marisa, Molly, and Keyli. She said, “Without them, I don’t know how far I would’ve gotten.” Sameera’s family was also a great source of support.

“My parents were very proud. They and my sisters were probably my biggest fans throughout the campaign. My mom helped me design and print my posters, and my sisters always reviewed my Insta posts before posting. Now that I am President, they monitor the need for updating and responding. Surprisingly they are interested in what I do, and I must keep reminding them that I did not win the American Presidency yet. LOL!” With the support of her family and friends, Sameera is working to make the 2022-2023 school year a promising one for junior students.

The demands on the Class President are constantly changing. “I don’t know how it will change or how different it will be, but I know that I will do everything in my efforts to make the junior year a lot more active and fun. I can’t change policies, and I don’t have unlimited power (unfortunately), but I can respond to the student body and listen to their voices. I will continue to add as many fun events as possible and shape our class for the better. So yes, I hope that this school year will be different but, at the same time, have as much success as last year!”

My team and I are considering having holiday events, like a winter movie night or a fall festival. So we will focus on fun events while fundraising for our prom, homecoming, etc.
