Amanda Gorman, born and raised in Los Angeles, became a nation-wide star through her captivating and meaningful works of art. Gorman has been recognized by Scholastic Inc., YoungArts, the Glamor magazine College Women of the Year Awards, and the Webby Awards. As the youngest National Poet Laureate at the age of 22, she has already accomplished so much in just the beginning of her career. From graduating from Harvard to having three books in the works, Amanda Gorman is the definition of dedication and hard work.
Gorman is a very accomplished writer, she has been asked to speak at the Library of Congress, the Lincoln Center, and most recently, the 2021 presidential inauguration.
Through the chaos of the election and 2020 in general, her poem The Hill We Climb highlights the hardships and challenges one must face and how we all must overcome them. For a nation that is revered as amazing or even “the best,” the United States has seen better days and this was emphasized by her line, “Somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken, but simply unfinished.” These words can be seen as a glimmer of comfort and reassurance especially during the presidential exchange of power.
Our nation is not completely broken, we just need to path ourselves up and march forward. The citizens, politicians, and even President Biden needed the reassurance that the next four years would be different. Amanda Gorman painted a picture with her words that shared hope with everyone. Constantly exceeding boundaries and expectations, she made herself into a role model to anyone and everyone.
